Some studies have indicated that vitamin E therapy may be able to slow the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in mild to moderate cases, though not all research supports this claim. Those suffering from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease may also see some benefit from vitamin E supplementation, but again, the evidence is far from conclusive. Claims have also been made regarding vitamin E’s supposed ability to help prevent preeclampsia, a blood pressure condition affecting pregnant women, as well as prostate cancer, but both claims lack support; in fact, there is evidence to suggest that vitamin E supplements may even increase the risk of prostate cancer, so using it as a home remedy is not advised – at least, not without consulting your doctor first.

Can You Gain Weight with Vitamin E?

One possible result of vitamin E intake that has not been widely examined is weight gain. To date, there is very little evidence to suggest that this nutrient will make any difference in a person’s effort to gain weight, and the studies that have examined this possibility have only been conducted using animal subjects.

One such study looked at the effects of this nutrient on the body mass of 120 female rats, which were subjected to one of several diets with varying levels of vitamin E. The researchers found that the body weight of rats on the standard and vitamin E-enriched diets “increased significantly” after 15 weeks, whereas rats whose diet lacked the vitamin to some extent did not gain weight. As the study has not been replicated in humans, it’s tough to say whether any person could expect to reproduce these results in their own lives, so for now, it’s safe to say that you shouldn’t count on vitamin E by itself or in protein shakes for weight gain.

How to Get Vitamin E in Your Diet

Whether you’re trying to gain weight or not, it’s important to get enough vitamin E in your diet. For many people, doing so won’t require much extra effort, but some may need to boost their intake a bit by adding certain foods or drinks to their diets. Foods that are rich in vitamin E include the following:

  • Roasted peanuts
  • Kiwi
  • Spinach
  • Tomatoes
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Broccoli
  • Mango

Although you might be tempted to simply down a pill full of vitamin E from your local drug store, know that experts recommend that you get no more than 1,000 IUs of vitamin E this way, as too much of it can lead to side effects like fatigue, cramps, nausea, headaches, and blurred vision. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t need more than 30 or 40 IUs of vitamin E, which you can get through foods or meal replacement shakes anyway. If weight gain is your goal, you should probably focus your attention on your calorie intake and consumption of macronutrients before trying to add more of this vitamin to your routine.
